Picket Fence vs Privacy Fence: How to Choose
The right fence depends on how you use your yard, so start with what you want it to do before you pick a material.

A fence does several jobs at once. It marks the property line, keeps kids and pets where you want them, adds curb appeal and, if you choose well, gives you some privacy. The two styles homeowners ask about most are the picket fence and the privacy fence. They look very different and they suit different yards, so here's how to think through the choice.
The picket fence
A picket fence is the classic. It's usually built from wood or vinyl, stands about three to four feet tall and has evenly spaced vertical slats. The gaps let light and air through and let you see the street or the garden. That makes it a natural fit for front yards, flower beds and decorative enclosures, and it gives a welcoming, traditional look.
The trade-off is privacy. A three-foot fence with gaps won't hide anything, and it won't keep a determined dog in. Wood pickets also need paint or sealer from time to time. If you value style and openness over seclusion, a picket fence is hard to beat.
The privacy fence
A privacy fence is a solid barrier, usually six to eight feet tall, built from wood, vinyl or composite. It blocks the view from neighbors and passersby, cuts down on noise, gives pets and children a secure space and gives you a backyard that feels like a room. It takes more material and more labor than a picket fence, so the starting cost is higher. For a backyard with a patio, a pool or a deck, many homeowners decide the extra privacy is worth it.
How long each material lasts
Style is only half the decision. The material decides how much upkeep you'll do and how many years you'll get. These are general ranges, and the real number depends on installation and care.
- Wood: untreated wood typically lasts 4 to 7 years, while cedar or redwood can last up to 30 years with proper care. Wood needs staining or sealing every few years.
- Vinyl: typically 20 to 30 years with minimal maintenance, little to no painting, and it can crack under extreme cold or hard impact.
- Aluminum: 30 to 50 years, rust-resistant and low maintenance, but it offers less privacy because the panels are open.
- Chain link: typically 20 years or more, easy to repair and a practical choice for containing pets or fencing a large lot. Privacy slats can be added.
Why sealing and staining wood matters
If you go with wood, the finish is what protects your investment. Rain, humidity, sun and temperature swings all work on a wood fence, and without protection the wood soaks up moisture and starts to rot, warp, crack and grow mold. A sealer forms a clear barrier against water, mold and UV rays. A stain adds color and brings out the grain while giving some protection of its own. Professionals often recommend using both: the stain for looks and the sealer for long-term defense.
Expect to reapply every few years, because sun and weather wear the finish down over time. Good materials and careful, even application make a visible difference, since streaks and blotchy tones are hard to fix once they dry. Sealed and stained wood also looks better, with less glare off raw boards.
Questions to ask yourself first
Before you call anyone, think about what the fence needs to do. Do you want to see out, or keep people from seeing in? Are there dogs or small kids? How much time do you want to spend on upkeep? How does the fence look next to your house and landscaping? Check with your city or your HOA about any rules for height and style before you settle on a design. If you're unsure, a contractor can walk the property with you and show how each option would sit on your lot.
